Creating The Atlas Sandal

The Atlas is our first high performance sandal, engineered for technical trails. Development for the Atlas began back in 2023: we knew we wanted a new high-performance sandal designed around a more substantial, lugged outsole. Our goal was not simply to make a thicker sandal, but to create something that could deliver more traction and durability while still feeling unmistakably ‘Earth Runners.’

Years of iterative design work went into the development of what is now the Atlas: material testing, CAD models, lug-pattern experiments, prototype molds, fit testing, heat-treatment testing, iON SYNC compatibility, and repeated refinement of the outsole geometry.

Designing A New Kind of Outsole

The original Atlas concept was envisioned as a 14-16 mm sandal using a lightweight compound similar to the Alpha, with 4 mm lugs and chamfered edges. The intent was to create a substantial, high-performance sandal while keeping material costs low enough to make it competitively priced.

The tread pattern went through a lot of iterations. Our team experimented with:

Rock patterns
Hexagonal patterns
Different lug scales
Embossed textures on top of the lugs
Different lug spacing
Different lug configurations around the lace slots
Different edge geometry
Beveled/chamfered lugs

We weren't just asking, “What tread looks cool?” We were asking how much space the tread needed to shed rocks and debris, how much rubber should contact the ground, how it would translate into an actual molded sandal, and how the pattern would scale across sizes.

Even the seemingly random elements of the final tread were carefully considered. We worked to make the lugs feel organic without creating oversized voids, obvious lines, or repetitive visual patterns.

iON Sync compatibility was originally designed into the outsole

Lots of development went into deciding where and how iON Sync plugs would sit, as the original intention was for Atlas to be suited up with our grounding plugs. However we ultimately decided to keep iON Sync plugs as an optional upgrade, rather than a default mode. All of our sandals are grounded by default: all models come equipped with copper plugs and conductive laces, so while installing iON Sync plugs on Atlas was cool, it was also redundant.


Prototyping and revising

Once the first prototype came back from Vibram, our team found several things that needed adjustment:

  • lug height needed to increase
  • bevel needed to become steeper
  • the top surface needed to be flat/buffed
  • the toe-post centering pin needed to be thicker
  • lug spacing needed to change
  • the outer lace guard needed to move
  • the textured outsole finish needed to become smooth…

Many of these changes came from things that simply couldn't be fully understood until we had a physical prototype in our hands. For example, molding and thermal shrinkage changed the geometry of the sandal blanks in ways that had to be accounted for in subsequent iterations. The next samples came back looking substantially better, but we kept refining.

We went through many rounds of prototype -> discover -> revise -> prototype again before we had our Eureka moment!

The Atlas

The finished Atlas is a 15 mm high-performance sandal built for more technical terrain while retaining the minimalist foundation of Earth Runners.

Atlas features a Vibram® Morflex outsole with a substantial lugged tread, our signature Earth Grip footbed made with moisture-wicking GOTS-certified canvas, and conductive laces for grounding.

At 15 mm, Atlas has a more substantial platform than our other sandals while remaining remarkably light. A single men's size 9 weighs just 6.2 ounces. For comparison, the Circadian is 9 mm thick and weighs 5.9 ounces.

After years of testing, refining, and rethinking the details, Atlas is ready for the trail.
